What American players need to understand about Europe

The biggest thing American players need to understand about Europe is that the environment is built around developing players. Not selling kits. Not selling tournaments. Not pay-to-play.

In America the model is the opposite. Families pay thousands of dollars a year for club soccer, then the system funnels you into a college program that does not guarantee you anything close to a professional pathway.

Pay-to-play means the players who get the best coaching, the best exposure, and the best teams are often the ones who can afford it. Talent is everywhere. Access is not. That is the part nobody wants to say out loud.

Europe is not perfect, but the financial barrier to being seen and developed is far lower. Clubs are scouting and developing because that is how their model works — they need players who can play.

College soccer is sold as the goal. For a lot of players it ends up being the ceiling. There is a real path that runs through Europe, and the earlier you understand that, the earlier you can plan for it.

I am not saying college is wrong for everyone. I am saying it is not the only door, and treating it like it is closes off everything else.
